As solo performers in the ever-evolving world of showbiz, it’s crucial to maintain a realistic approach to our skills and development. Many of us start our journey belting out tunes into a hairbrush or choreographing dances with friends, igniting a passion to delve deeper into the world of performance.

Throughout our training at schools and colleges, we’re constantly surrounded by exceptional and creative individuals, whether we’re standing next to a fellow dancer in a class or doing vocal warm-ups alongside a talented singer. This environment serves as one of the best avenues for improvement in the industry. We all aspire to be the best, knowing that hard work and dedication are the keys to success.

However, as we step into the vast landscape of showbiz, we quickly realise that the journey can be quite solitary. Travelling, rehearsing, and often performing solo can create a sense of isolation, leaving little time to observe what’s happening around us. So, how do we stay connected and continue to thrive, pushing ourselves to excel even when the going gets tough?

For me, the answer is simple: collaboration. Working with writers, musicians, dancers, actors, painters, and designers allows us to tap into different perspectives and stay inspired. Even if it means volunteering our time on creative projects, collaborating keeps the creative fire burning and fosters a sense of community.

Engaging in collaboration opens doors to unexpected ideas and opportunities. A conversation with a costume designer who shares their experience touring with Diana Ross might spark inspiration for a new song or performance piece. While many of us reach a point where we turn down unpaid work, there’s value in collaborating with people who inspire us, as it enriches our creative journey and broadens our horizons.

While it’s essential to have regular work to pay the bills, it’s equally important to engage in projects that ignite our passion and drive for excellence. By continually seeking new experiences, meeting new people, and stepping out of our comfort zones, we prevent stagnation and keep our creative juices flowing.

So, let’s embrace collaboration, have fun, and explore new avenues of creativity. By keeping our work dynamic and our minds open, we can ensure that our passion for performance remains alive and thriving. After all, there’s nothing to lose and everything to gain by giving it a try.
